AULD LANG SYNE

NEW YEAR'S ANTHEM AND ITS HISTORY

In sentimental American movies, Robert Burns' Auld Lang Syne is sung by crowds at big New Year's finales.

Auld Lang Syne is one of Scotland's gifts to the world, recalling the love and kindness of days gone by. By the act of taking our neighbors' hands while singing, it also gives a sense of belonging and fellowship to take into the future.

It is one of the many folk songs from the great Lowland Scots tradition collected and fashioned by Burns. But the Auld Lang Syne tune which is sung from Times Square to Tokyo and has conquered the world, is not the one to which Robert Burns put he original words. The older tune---as sung for you here by Mairi Campbell---evokes the subtle use of the traditional air.

Here are just a few of the movies in which

Auld Lang Syne is featured in either the

traditional or modern versions:

It's A Wonderful Life (1946)

The Apartment (1960)

Young Guns (1988)

Ghostbusters (1989)

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Forrest Gump (1994)

Kill Bill Volume 1 (2003)

Sex and The City - The Movie (2008)

Whichever tune it is sung to and wherever in the world it is sung, Auld Lang Syne retains the great emotional resonance of the original. MoviesAndMore.tv hopes you enjoy the traditional rendition so beautifully presented here by Mairi Campbell. It's our way of wishing you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
